Your Fall Home Exterior Maintenance Checklist

fall home exterior maintenanceAutumn is a lovely time of year, and it’s also the perfect time of year to get things in order and make sure that your home is ready for the colder months ahead. Take full advantage of this time to make any necessary repairs. Check out some of these fall home exterior maintenance ideas.

Fall Home Exterior Maintenance

Masonry:  You should check all parts of your home’s foundation for cracks and missing caulk. This includes where the masonry meets the siding, where wires or pipes enter the house, and around all doors and window frames. This is one of the least expensive exterior maintenance jobs, and one of the most important. Any opening in the structure of your home will allow water to get in and freeze over the winter, resulting in things like mold and cracks. It also is an easy access point for rodents and other creatures. They’ll search for warmth in the winter months. Remember, a mouse only needs a hole the diameter of a pencil to enter your home.

Windows & Doors: You will also need to remove all screens and replace them with storm windows and doors. Make sure you properly store the screens in a dry area.

Siding: Check for peeling or blistering paint on your exterior walls, as that’s a sign that the paint is no longer protecting the siding. Loose siding shingles should be addressed as to not become a hazard during fall and winter storms.

Pools: Examine your pool cover for damage and ensure the pool machinery is closed and secure.

Garage Doors: Check your garage door to see if it’s sealed off properly.

Roofing & Gutters: Don’t neglect to check your roof and your gutters. Look for missing or loose roof shingles. If your roof is not functioning properly, you are risking deterioration to your insulation, wood, and drywall, which also puts your electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems at risk. Make sure to clean out all of your gutters and downspouts after the leaves have fallen, and make sure that they are in good shape as well.

Insulation & Ventilation: Go into your attic and check for proper insulation and ventilation. You’d be surprised how much heat can escape the house without a properly maintained attic. Poor insulation and broken gutter systems can lead to dangerous ice dams.
