Should You DIY or Hire a Professional Roofing Contractor?
Saving money is an attractive temptation for many DIYers. However, if you don’t have the proper knowledge and skills, it can end up costing you more. That said, there are those in which home repair and improvement come naturally. These men and women often have grown up in households where their parents regularly tacked home projects. They participated in home repair since childhood, and tend to know their own limitations. So, before grabbing your tools, ask yourself these questions.
1. Do you know all the equipment and materials you will need? – Do you know what kind of shingles will work with your roof? Do you know how much to order? Do you have the right kind of tools? How about safety equipment?
2. Do you have all the knowledge you will need? – Do you actually know how to measure, cut, and lay the roofing shingles? Poorly installed shingles can and will cause your roof to leak, which can create interior home damage.
3. Do you have the strength and stamina? – Working on a roof is serious business. Packages of shingles are heavy, there is a lot of physical labor, and roofs become very hot. Even if you are physically fit, you need to know to manage yourself. Mistakes are dangerous.
4. Do you actually have the time? – While professionals do sometimes encounter delays, one must complete a roofing project in a reasonable amount of time. Do you know how long the work will take, and can you truly fit it into your everyday schedule?
